'tis the season....for squirrels to prepare for fall!

Have you noticed that August barely gets started and the squirrels start to drop acorn casings and pine cone cores all over your yard? Before you know it, they'll be running across the street, wondering which way to go to avoid your vehicle, many being flattened in the process. Share any interesting Squirrel Facts that you know.

  1. Squirrels molt their tails twice a year. The winter tail is much thicker and warmer, and used as a blanket for the squirrel to "cover up" while they sleep.

  2. Mike Hamilton, the past head of the James Reserve, once told me when I questioned why squirrels were so crazy after a big rain storm, that squirrels are "fungivores" and after a good rain, they dig up and eat lots of mushrooms. Well just like us humans, sometimes they get "good mushrooms" and sometimes they get "wacky mushrooms" and THAT is why they seem to be a bit wacko after a big rain. I didn't research this fact, but Mike is a smart guy, and I'm willing to take his word for it.
